Message From The Program Director
The ability to care for patients with a wide range of clinical problems is one of the
distinguishing characteristics of the internist.  This ability is fostered by experience
on general medical services, both inpatient and outpatient, with exposure to a wide
spectrum of diseases in various stages of acuity.

During  training, the resident should work diligently to learn the pathophysiology
and mechanisms of disease, the skills of interviewing, and the art of
communication.  A resident should develop the interpersonal skills that are
necessary to elicit and record a thorough and accurate history, to establish and
maintain a therapeutic physician-patient relationship, and to implement optimal
medical management.  A resident should concentrate on his/her examination skills
and interact in developing these skills with fellow residents, attending physicians,
and other health care workers.  A team approach is an important aspect of the
practice of internal medicine, and residents should take the opportunity to function
in harmony with other members of the health care team and become proficient as
leaders in the organization and management of patient care.  The residency
program must place emphasis not only on medical problems, but also on health
promotion, cultural, socioeconomic, ethical, occupational, environmental, and
behavioral issues.  In addition, the impact of illness on other aspects of life, with
special emphasis on the family, must be stressed.  Residents must develop the
ability to treat patients humanistically.

The primary goals of The Jewish Hospital Internal
Medicine Residency Program are:

  • prepare residents for a wide range of clinical problems, whether or not the
resident chooses to pursue subspecialty training or the practice of general
    internal medicine.
  • develop physicians who uphold the well-being of their patients and
understand the potential conflicts created by the limitation of medical
    resources in our society.
  • develop highly effective leaders of the health care team.
  • promote an environment which encourages participation in scholarly activity,
lifelong learning, and fulfillment of scientific curiosity.
  • pass certification examinations of the American Board of Internal Medicine.

The Jewish Hospital of Cincinnati Internal Medicine Residency Program is
dedicated to achieving the goals and standards outlined above for each of its
resident physicians in training.  If you share these goals and are dedicated in your
commitment to the service of others, we strongly encourage you to apply.  Take a
few minutes to browse our web pages and I am sure you will find that The Jewish
Hospital of Cincinnati has a lot to offer.  Feel free to contact us with any questions
