Rounds & Reports

Morning Report

Weekdays, 7:15 a.m. - 8:30 a.m.
Morning report is held Monday through Friday.

Each morning report will be conducted by a faculty member and will be attended
by the admitting senior residents, (AOD, AON) and all residents currently working
on the medical ward teams.  The format may vary from month to month in an
attempt to keep the exercise dynamic and educational.  Morning report is
expected to be an active discussion session involving the residents, chief resident
and faculty members.  All pertinent x-rays and copies of EKGs should be brought
to Morning Report by the intern.

Morning report will serve several functions, including:

  • Development of communication skills between the residents.

  • Discussion of interesting patients and management problems arising from
    the previous night's admissions.

  • Discussion of pertinent related topics with regard to the presented patients.

Attendance at morning report is mandatory for residents on the ward in-
patient service, including the admitting residents (AOD and AON).

Medical Grand Rounds

Held every Tuesday morning (except the second Tuesday of the month), Medical
Grand Rounds provide the residents with exposure to both local and nationally
renowned speakers on current topics and controversies in Internal Medicine.  In
addition, each third-year resident will be required to research a subject and
present it at a Medical Grand Rounds after reviewing the contents of the
presentation with an appropriate attending physician.

Surgical Grand Rounds

Held every Saturday morning, Surgical Grand Rounds allow the medical residents
an opportunity to learn about on-going surgical dilemmas and topics which are
multidisciplinary in nature.

EKG Rounds

Conducted by a staff cardiologist every Thursday afternoon, EKG rounds provide
an in-depth discussion on the evaluation of EKGs.

Teaching Rounds

Each month an attending physician will be designated to conduct teaching rounds
for each medical ward team and for the combined ICU/CCU Team. Teaching
rounds will be held a minimum of 4 1/2 hours per week.   Subject matter to be
discussed will include discussions on patient care problems, bedside evaluations
& demonstrations of appropriate examination techniques, and discussions of
relevant didactics.

Teaching rounds for the intensive care unit will be conducted by both a
cardiologist and a pulmonologist.  Each specialist will emphasize issues pertaining
to his/her discipline.  Members of both the ICU/CCU teams will attend the
combined intensive care teaching rounds.

Medical Service Rounds  (see medical service syllabus)

Medical service rounds will be conducted on a regular basis, as agreed upon by
the medical service attending and the senior medical resident.  This will consist of
team rounds 2-3 times per week and individual rounds daily, at which time bedside
evaluations and management dilemmas will be discussed with regards to the
medical service patients.

Daily Check In/Out Procedures

Teams:

  • All ward team members should check out together between 4:00 and 6:00
PM except for the post-call team (who will have checked out by noontime).
A similar procedure is followed by the ICU/CCU team members.

  • All ward team interns should check in with the ward team senior residents
each morning to discuss the status of their patients and divide up any new
    patients and responsibilities.

Senior Residents:

  • One senior resident from the ward teams and one from the ICU/CCU will
check out with night  senior resident at 6:00 PM for ongoing cross coverage
    supervision.

  • The team senior residents do not leave the hospital before the interns on
their team(s) have completed their work.

  • Night senior residents should check in with team senior residents prior to
morning report to allow distribution of admissions that may not have been
    covered by interns overnight.
