Weekdays, 7:15 a.m. - 8:30 a.m. Morning report is held Monday through Friday.
Each morning report will be conducted by a faculty member and will be attended by the admitting senior residents, (AOD, AON) and all residents currently working on the medical ward teams. The format may vary from month to month in an attempt to keep the exercise dynamic and educational. Morning report is expected to be an active discussion session involving the residents, chief resident and faculty members. All pertinent x-rays and copies of EKGs should be brought to Morning Report by the intern.
Morning report will serve several functions, including:
Development of communication skills between the residents.
Discussion of interesting patients and management problems arising from the previous night's admissions.
Discussion of pertinent related topics with regard to the presented patients.
Attendance at morning report is mandatory for residents on the ward in- patient service, including the admitting residents (AOD and AON).
Medical Grand Rounds
Held every Tuesday morning (except the second Tuesday of the month), Medical Grand Rounds provide the residents with exposure to both local and nationally renowned speakers on current topics and controversies in Internal Medicine. In addition, each third-year resident will be required to research a subject and present it at a Medical Grand Rounds after reviewing the contents of the presentation with an appropriate attending physician.
Surgical Grand Rounds
Held every Saturday morning, Surgical Grand Rounds allow the medical residents an opportunity to learn about on-going surgical dilemmas and topics which are multidisciplinary in nature.
EKG Rounds
Conducted by a staff cardiologist every Thursday afternoon, EKG rounds provide an in-depth discussion on the evaluation of EKGs.
Teaching Rounds
Each month an attending physician will be designated to conduct teaching rounds for each medical ward team and for the combined ICU/CCU Team. Teaching rounds will be held a minimum of 4 1/2 hours per week. Subject matter to be discussed will include discussions on patient care problems, bedside evaluations & demonstrations of appropriate examination techniques, and discussions of relevant didactics.
Teaching rounds for the intensive care unit will be conducted by both a cardiologist and a pulmonologist. Each specialist will emphasize issues pertaining to his/her discipline. Members of both the ICU/CCU teams will attend the combined intensive care teaching rounds.
Medical Service Rounds (see medical service syllabus)
Medical service rounds will be conducted on a regular basis, as agreed upon by the medical service attending and the senior medical resident. This will consist of team rounds 2-3 times per week and individual rounds daily, at which time bedside evaluations and management dilemmas will be discussed with regards to the medical service patients.
Daily Check In/Out Procedures
Teams:
All ward team members should check out together between 4:00 and 6:00 PM except for the post-call team (who will have checked out by noontime). A similar procedure is followed by the ICU/CCU team members.
All ward team interns should check in with the ward team senior residents each morning to discuss the status of their patients and divide up any new patients and responsibilities.
Senior Residents:
One senior resident from the ward teams and one from the ICU/CCU will check out with night senior resident at 6:00 PM for ongoing cross coverage supervision.
The team senior residents do not leave the hospital before the interns on their team(s) have completed their work.
Night senior residents should check in with team senior residents prior to morning report to allow distribution of admissions that may not have been covered by interns overnight.
