Scheduled Conferences
In order to ensure an adequate level of training, it is realized that the residents
must be exposed to conferences which will allow them to participate and maintain
on-going knowledge of current topics. The following conferences are an attempt to
ensure that these goals are obtained:
Hematology/Oncology Multidisciplinary Conference
This conference is held every Thursday afternoon, at which time residents present
cancer patients for discussion. Subspecialties in attendance will include oncology,
internal medicine, surgery, pathology and radiology.
Noon Conference
Noon conference is held Monday through Friday throughout the year, and is the
major didactic session in which general medical, and specialty topics are
discussed. Lecturers for Noon Conference include staff attending physicians,
guest lecturers, and periodically, resident lecturers.
Morbidity & Mortality Conference
Held one or two times per month at noontime, this conference provides an
opportunity to discuss management problems on resident-covered patients. This
conference is conducted by members of the medical staff, with a resident
presenting each case.
Clinical Pathological Correlation (CPC) Conference
This conference is held once a month to provide an in-depth discussion of the
patient's management and the findings at autopsy or surgery. This is followed by a
discussion of the disease process, usually presented by the resident taking care of
the patient. All CPC’s are attended by an attending physician as well as a staff
pathologist. The residents presenting the case should optimally have attended the
autopsy to maximize the learning experience.
Journal Club
This is intended to be a critical review of current medical literature emphasizing
evidence-based medicine. During each session, two or three journal articles will
be presented by assigned teams of residents who will also be responsible for
researching related articles. Journal Club is conducted once or twice a month by a
designated staff attending physician.
Chief Resident Weekly Conference
This conference is held once weekly. During each session an interesting clinical
topic is discussed .
All residents are required to attend a minimum of 75% of these
conferences. Sign in sheets will be supplied at all conferences.
Senior Lectures
Each R-2 and R-3 will be required to give a minimum of two 45-minute to 1-
hour lectures a year. These lectures are to pertain to current topics in
internal medicine. The lectures are assigned and the topics approved by
the Chief Medical Resident.
